Risks of Riding in Warm/Hot Weather

There are a few risks associated with warm weather motorcycle riding that you should be aware of. Just because it’s not pouring down rain doesn’t mean there aren’t any safety concerns. The heat is going to be a major contributor to potential problems. Your vision may be impaired when riding in the heat. This is because of a “sun dazzle” that can appear on the road when it’s warm outside. This can create glare off of other vehicles.

Your health is also a concern when it comes to the warmer weather. Intense heat can cause minor problems like a sunburn or major issues like heatstroke. Being uncomfortable or ill while on your bike can lead to a loss in control of your machine. Make sure to take steps to prevent this!

Stay Hydrated

One of the most common issues that you might face when riding in warmer weather is dehydration. As you travel, you lose hydration through heat, exercise, and clothing. Make sure to pack plenty of water as well as salty snacks or a sports drink to replace lost electrolytes.

Ride During Cooler Times

We know you can’t always pick what time of day to be on the road, but if you can, take advantage of this! Consider getting on your motorcycle during the cooler times of the day. We suggest avoiding the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. hours. This time period is generally when temperatures peak. You can also break up time in the warm weather by eating a meal in an air-conditioned restaurant. In general, aim to ride in the early morning or after the sun has set.

Take Breaks

One warm weather riding tip that most people overlook is simply taking a break. Giving yourself and your bike a chance to relax and recuperate is a critical part of combating summer heat. Listen to your body, and take breaks when you feel like you need to!

We hope these tips help you have some fun under the sun this summer! If you have any questions or you’re looking to buy a new motorcycle, contact Thompson’s Motorsports in Terre Haute, Indiana.
