That’s why you need to do some research and closely inspect the model before you make your final decision. Things to Bring

When you’re going to inspect a used motorcycle, you’ll need a few essential items, such as a flashlight to examine all nooks and crannies of the bike, a screwdriver to test the wheel spokes, and a notebook and pen to jot down all the details you want to know. You'll also want to bring some cash for paying a deposit if you decide to buy the bike.

Examine the Body

There might be some light scratches on a pre-owned motorcycle. However, you’ll want to be wary of any dents or scratches that look like more than just a cosmetic concern. If the paint is flaking off or the chrome or other metal parts are rusting, it may indicate neglect. In that case, you’ll want to give the bike a pass.  

Look Over the Engine

The condition of a bike’s engine can reveal a lot about how the previous owner may have maintained it. So, examine it when the motorcycle is cold. A warm vehicle may mean that the seller had started it earlier to let any startup issues happen before you arrived. So, when you turn it on, it will run smoothly.

Try to hear if the engine is making any odd rattling sounds or producing any heavy smoke. Ensure that the exhaust is free of any dents and that the clutch doesn’t drag or slip. Take the motorcycle on a test drive to confirm that everything is in working order. 

Check the Electronics

When you’re inspecting a used motorcycle, make sure to check its electrical system, including the lights, horn, battery, and charging system. Test the signal and brake lights and ensure that the high and low beams and the charging system function properly. You must also verify if the horn is loud enough, and that the battery starts without any issues.

Look at the Tires

The overall health of the tires can not only affect the performance of a motorcycle, but it can keep the rider safe, too. Make sure you consider the following points:

• The tires must have plenty of tread and be free of dry rot.
• Spin the wheels to see if they wobble or have any dents.
• Tap each spoke with a screwdriver to hear a “ping” sound. If the spokes are not tight enough, there might not be a ping sound.
• See if the chain is properly lubricated.
